Reaction to Cosmopolitanism Reading

From this reading, I learned that is important to find the balance between extreme nationalism and ignoring the differences of cultural and people. The author calls it "partial cosmopolitanism" and it's important to practice while traveling, and in general. Nationalism is very dangerous because it can lead to prejudice and racism. It can also lead to believe your country is better than others, or it's "the best". We need to respect our differences though, and how they enrich the world. We need to have an open mind, be accepting to new cultures, and willing to learn. It is also important to respect those that do not wish to accept this mentality, but stay in their own community, like the Amish, or different communities in remote locations. I remember hearing about the guy who tried to contact this recluse community that hadn't had outside contact for a long time, and they killed him. If he had managed to make contact, he would've brought diseases and sickness. We must respect other's boundaries.
Another interesting thing I read was "A creed that disdains the partialities of kinsfolk and community may have a past, but it has no future." Although it is important to be eager to learn about new communities and groups of people, our community is also essential. We need to contribute to our own community and be friendly and welcoming to the people around us.

I Almost Met Fairies

I thought of my mum as I looked through the gigantic bus window at all the trees. The scenery reminded me of Minnesota, and I took a few pictures so I could show my mother. The bus was huge, and filled with forty of my classmates. At my feet was the breakfast/lunch we had put into a paper bag, including a nutella-smeared bagel, a banana, an apple, a water bottle, a bag of crisps, and a Snickers bar. I Cried My Eyes Out at Charlotte Brontë's Home

I’ve always loved Jane Eyre. I thought she was wonderful, kind, independent, smart, talented, and brave. I read the book and watched the BBC movie and thought about what it would be like to live on those moors, with all the open space and the huge, dimly lit stone house. When I went to Northern England, I saw the same things Charlotte Brontë did. I saw the same streets, the same trees, the same moss and I, Aliana Schaeffer, stood in that woman’s very home, where she walked and lived and ate and laughed and I stood in the same room where she sat down and wrote, by hand, (because there weren’t lovely things like laptops yet), my most favourite book in the world.
